TEMPE, AZ — One person was hit and killed by a wrong-way driver overnight along Loop 202 Red Mountain near Priest Drive.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say the collision involved multiple vehicles in the westbound lanes around 12:05 a.m. Monday.

A Subaru SUV was reportedly seen traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Loop 202 at 24th Street.

The SUV reportedly sideswiped a Hyundai passenger car before hitting a Kia passenger car head-on and rolling onto its roof near Priest Drive.

The Kia driver was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as 21-year-old Emma Huckleberry of Waddell.

The wrong-way driver, identified by DPS as 44-year-old Joseph Rollins, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Hyundai driver reportedly fled the scene, leaving the vehicle abandoned nearby.

On Tuesday, August 19, officials announced that Rollins, who had a probation warrant, was arrested and faces a second-degree homicide charge.

Impairment is believed to have played a role in the crash.

The freeway was shut down at Center Parkway for several hours, but it has since reopened.
