PHOENIX — A deadly crash has shut down the intersection of 31st and Southern avenues in Phoenix on Thursday morning.

Police say the crash happened around 3:15 a.m. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with injuries.

One of the drivers, identified by police as 28-year-old Jose Gallegos, died from his injuries.

The other suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

During a preliminary investigation, detectives determined Gallegos was traveling southbound on 31st Avenue when he failed to stop for a stop sign at Southern Avenue, which ended in a crash.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor, however, an investigation remains ongoing.
