PHOENIX — A bipartisan bill at the Legislature would create a rental assistance program in the Department of Economic Security.

Renters would get up to $5,000 or two months of assistance, whichever is less, and payments would be made directly to landlords.

State Rep. Alma Hernandez sponsors the bill, House Bill 2682, and has three Republican co-sponsors and backing by the state's landlord association.

The bill is scheduled to be heard in the House Commerce Committee on Tuesday afternoon.
