PHOENIX — Summer travel is winding down, kids are back in school, and airlines are competing for your business — and that could mean big savings on your next trip.

Sunday marks National Cheap Flight Day, but it's less about one magical day to find cheap tickets and more about the start of a two-and-a-half-week off-peak season running from Aug. 23 to Sept. 10.

"Some flights can stay the same, some you can find huge savings so domestically somewhere between 12-20% internationally though and I want people to keep this in mind you can save up to 40% on certain bookings," said Christianne Klein, founder of foodfamilytravel.com.

To find the biggest savings, she recommends starting to look now. You can use Google Flights and save current prices, then starting Sunday, track how prices have changed.

Flexibility is also key. She says Tuesdays are typically the cheapest day — not necessarily to book, but to fly.

As for holiday travel, Klein says some deals may be available, but most of the best offers during this off-peak window will be for trips in September and October.
