PHOENIX — A man has died after a shooting involving a police officer in north Phoenix on Sunday.
Phoenix police say they were originally called to the area near 7th Avenue and Beardsley Road for a report of a man walking around a neighborhood with a gun.
Officers arrived in the area but could not find the person described. Shortly after, officers located him in the nearby area.
“The officer gave commands, obviously, to the man to drop that gun. The man did not comply and actually advanced towards the officer and did raise his handgun in the direction of the officer. It was at this point that the officer-involved shooting did occur,” said Sgt. Rob Scherer, a spokesperson with the Phoenix Police Department.
“Literally, I hear like pop, pop, pop, like two or three. It didn’t even sound like a gunshot at all, it literally sounded like firecrackers," said Jose Gonzales, who lives nearby.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died. He has since been identified as 75-year-old Michael Frank Breuer.
The shooting is now being investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
