A North Dakota woman visiting the Valley on Father's Day hit the jackpot, winning more than $1 million and honoring her late dad.

Ashley Oswald, who lived in Phoenix for two decades, was visiting friends in Phoenix last week when they decided to play at Gila River Hotels and Casinos - Vee Quiva on Father's Day.

According to a media release, Oswald had the tradition of playing at Vee Quiva with her father and decided to celebrate the holiday there to honor him.

While playing the Wheel of Fortune slot machine, Oswald hit the jackpot, winning $1,090,948.51.

"There's no doubt he was celebrating with me," Oswald said of her late father. "It is an incredible experience to win on Father's Day. My dad would be so excited for me."

She's reportedly planning on buying a new vehicle with her winnings but doesn't yet have a full plan of what she will do with the rest of the money.

Earlier this year, a Phoenix man won a million dollars while celebrating his birthday at the Lone Buttecasino in Chandler. A Buckeye resident took home $115,000 in February after winning on the Wheel of Fortune slot machine at Vee Quiva.

Vee Quiva is located in Laveen, south of 51st Avenue and Estrella Drive.

A new casino is currently under construction in the Fountain Hills area, replacing the current Fort McDowell casino.
