PHOENIX — Phoenix police say one person was shot and killed by officers near 20th Street and Southern Avenue early Sunday morning.
Police say officers were first dispatched to the area around 12:45 a.m. to make contact with a man on a bicycle for an unknown reason. When they contacted the man, he began to run.
Officers caught up to the man, who was identified as 36-year-old Efrain Hidalgo, who struggled and resisted arrest, and pulled out a knife. An officer then fired his duty weapon, striking the Hidalgo.
No officers were hurt, but police say Hidalgo, who was shot, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
No further details have been released.
