PHOENIX — Phoenix police say more than 200 people were arrested Sunday evening for violations related to curfew and other violations during protests.

A planned demonstration began around 5 p.m. in Phoenix Sunday. Around 8 p.m., announcements were made to the demonstrators that the curfew put in place by Governor Doug Ducey was going into effect.

At that time, police say some in the crowd began igniting fireworks and throwing objects at officers. About 10 minutes past curfew, an unlawful assembly was declared due to criminal activity.

Initial information suggests more than 200 arrests were made for crimes involving rioting, unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct and curfew violations. More than 10 juveniles were also detained for those crimes.

Police did not give information about property damage from Sunday’s demonstrations.

“We would ask if anyone has information related to individuals who were involved in crimes such as criminal damage and assaults to contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS,” police said Monday morning.

Scottsdale police said they did not make any curfew arrests in their city and no further arrests were made after Saturday night looting. Their investigation is still ongoing.
