PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University says former men’s basketball coach Dan Majerle appears to have filed a lawsuit against the university.

The former Phoenix Suns All-Star was hired to take over the GCU men's basketball program in 2013, leading the Antelopes transition into NCAA division one basketball. He was fired from his position in March.

“GCU was surprised to learn through members of the media that former coach Dan Majerle has apparently filed a lawsuit against the University,” a spokesperson for the university said in a message Tuesday morning. “Rather than serving the University with a copy of his complaint, Coach Majerle appears instead to have provided copies of his complaint to members of the media.”

The message from GCU continues: “The University financially supported Coach Majerle and the men's basketball program at the highest level during his seven-year tenure and wanted nothing but the best for him and the program. We regret that Coach Majerle's tenure had to end the way it did, but the University is prepared to defend itself and its decision if necessary should Coach Majerle decide to continue with litigation.”

ABC15 is working to learn more about the lawsuit.

GCU says they are not yet able to comment on the apparent filing until receiving a copy of the complaint and reviewing allegations made by Majerle.
