Two more Peoria firefighters released from hospital after explosion in Surprise

PEORIA, AZ — Only one firefighter remains hospitalized after an explosion in Surprise earlier this month, according to the Peoria Fire Department.

The incident happened April 19 around 8 p.m. near Grand Avenue and Deer Valley Road at an APS substation.

As firefighters assessed the scene, an explosion occurred injuring at least eight responders.

Four Peoria firefighters were hospitalized after the explosion with serious injuries, but only one remains hospitalized. That man remains in stable condition. Two more were released since the last update from the department. One of those two was transferred Sunday to a rehab facility.

Four Surprise firefighters were injured in the explosion, but were released from the hospital in the first 24 hours.

No additional information on what caused the explosion has been released.
