A Mesa teacher who was hit by a car Tuesday is improving, but still in a coma according to his wife.

Bill Mellyn has several broken bones and swelling on his brain.

"It's probably best that he is still in the coma because the doctors said he would be in extreme pain if he was awake," his wife Jacqueline Mellyn said.

The popular chemistry teacher was riding his bicycle home from Mountain View High School when the driver drifted into his lane, striking him.  The crash happened near 24th Street and McKellips Road.  Police said the driver stopped and is cooperating.  Students describe the 30-year veteran educator as a great teacher, that always took time to help his students.

They started a go fund me page and has already raised more than $18,000 dollars.

"I think that shows a lot of people support him and a lot of people love him," student Ramon West said.

Mellyn planned to retire after this school year, which ends next week.  He and his wife recently sold their Mesa home and were in the process of moving out.
