The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says human remains were found at Canyon Lake on Monday.

The family of Omar Linares, tell ABC15 they believe the human remains is the 23-year-old man.

Linares visited Canyon Lake with two friends on February 19th. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, he fell into the water after his kayak capsized amidst high winds and rough water.

MCSO said around 3 p.m. on Monday, a boater at the lake found the remains.

The remains are currently at the medical examiner to officially confirm the identification.

Omar's family told ABC15 they received a call from MCSO on Monday evening. While the medical examiner still needs to identify the body, Omar's sister is confident her brother has been found.

"It was really heartbreaking because I just didn't want to believe that he's gone," said Melissa Linares. "Now that we know for sure he's gone I have to come to terms and accept that he's really gone."

Linares says she and her family are appreciative of the search effort by MCSO over the past two months.

"We wouldn't want (this) to happen to anybody else," she said.

Omar's family now hopes their pain can positively impact other families. They hope this serves as a reminder to wear a life jacket when out on the water, something Linares says her brother didn't do.

"If people were more careful on their safety it would make a big difference," Linares said. "He'd still be here if he had the life jacket on."

Canyon Lake is northeast of Phoenix, near Tortilla Flat.
