PHOENIX — Two people are dead and another is in critical condition following a crash in Phoenix on Wednesday.
An SUV and a four-door car were involved in the crash near 35th Avenue and Union Hills Drive just before 2:15 p.m.
Phoenix police say the driver of the SUV, 37-year-old Pedro Lopez Cardona, was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and died at the scene.
The driver of the car was taken to a hospital in critical condition. A passenger in the car, 63-year-old Boniface Black, died at the scene.
During a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the SUV was traveling westbound on Union Hills Drive at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light and hit the car, which was making a left-hand turn to go north on 35th Avenue.
The investigation remains ongoing.
