PHOENIX — The man responsible for shooting and killing a man outside of a Phoenix McDonald's restaurant last month has surrendered to police.

Keesean Kapri Jones, 18, turned himself into police Thursday afternoon.

Jones is accused of shooting and killing 34-year-old Eric Hernandez on February 13, outside of a McDonald’s restaurant near 19th Avenue and Baseline Road.

Police said Jones asked Hernandez if he could borrow his phone and then ran off. Hernandez ran after the suspect, who turned around and shot him, police said.

The initial encounter between Jones and Hernandez was caught on surveillance video.

Jones reportedly fled to California after the shooting but returned on March 11 with the intention of surrendering to police.

Upon his arrest, Jones reportedly admitted to police that he stole the victim's cell phone. He dropped the phone after realizing that Hernandez was chasing him. However, he said he got scared when Hernandez continued to pursue him, so he turned around and shot him.

Jones is being held on a $500,000 bond for theft and second-degree murder.
