PHOENIX — A police investigation is underway after a deadly shooting involving officers near 7th Street and Southern Avenue in Phoenix.

Phoenix police say the incident started around 8 a.m. when officers responded to a home for a call regarding a mental health emergency.

The caller reportedly told the dispatcher that the man in question was armed and that he was at risk of confronting responding officers.

Officers arrived at the scene and were attempting to safely make contact with the individual when he ran out of the home and toward officers, leading to a confrontation.

Less-lethal means were used to attempt to stop the man, but they did not stop his behavior, leading to a shooting involving officers.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Officials have since identified the man as 58-year-old Victor Conrad Altamirano.

A weapon was reportedly recovered from the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Police Chief Matt Giordano also spoke at the scene Thursday, saying he is “committed to continuing our training…to hopefully resolve situations like this in a peaceful and safe manner.”
