PHOENIX — A man is dead after a shooting involving a Phoenix police officer on Monday evening.

Phoenix police say the incident occurred near 75th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road after 6 p.m. when officers were dispatched to check out a shooting call.

The caller said a man was shooting at a home and that the gunfire had struck a family member.

That shooting suspect was identified in court records as Edgar Garcia.

When officers arrived, a community member told them that someone was "shooting people" and to go inside. One officer then ran toward the home and fired one round from his duty rifle through the open door of the home.

When officers entered the home, they found two men with gunshot wounds.

Records show that one of the gunshot victims was a resident of the home. He was in a violent fight with Garcia, trying to subdue him, when a Phoenix police officer shot and killed him. He was identified as 36-year-old Christian Diaz Rendon. Family members say he was shot in the head.

Court records state that the other gunshot victim was shot in the leg by Garcia. He survived.

After being released from the hospital, Garcia was arrested on charges of 1st degree murder during a crime, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm, kidnapping resulting in death and 1st degree burglary.
