LAVEEN, AZ — An 18-year-old is in custody, accused of killing a Laveen man and living in his home after the shooting.
Phoenix police say they were called to a home near 51st and Southern avenues around 11:15 p.m. Monday for a welfare check.
The caller indicated that neighbors had not seen a man at his home in several days.
When officers arrived, they talked to a neighbor who told them they believed someone was in the home because someone was going in and out of the home.
Police then attempted to contact the home, and at that time, they saw a man dead in the backyard.
That man was identified as 57-year-old David Jimenez.
Officers proceeded to set up a perimeter around the home and contact the person inside.
After an extended barricade situation, a man, identified as 18-year-old Xzavion Johnson, came out of the home and was arrested.
While interviewing Johnson, he reportedly admitted to breaking into the home and shooting and killing Jimenez. He said he believed that had occurred in December.
Since the shooting, Johnson told police he had been living in the home.
Johnson faces multiple charges, including murder and burglary.
Police do not believe there are any additional suspects.
The burglary and shooting remain under investigation.
