A sand castle on a beach in California paid tribute to Charles Keating IV, a Navy SEAL with ties to the Valley who was killed in combat in Iraq earlier this week.
Keating, a graduate of Arcadia High School, was killed while fighting members of the Islamic State about 17 miles north of Mosul, a city in the northern part of the country.
Keating ran track in high school, and was remembered as a constant cheerleader for his teammates by his former coach.
The Pentagon has said Keating died while responding to an attack involving a U.S. advisory team working to defeat ISIS. Authorities said his death has caused them to reassess the protection of U.S. forces in the country.
Military officials said Keating's body returned to the United States on Friday, with a funeral service and burial to be held in the San Diego area.
