Republican Gov. Doug Ducey's Democratic opponent in the 2014 governor's race has joined with him to support a voter referendum that will boost school funding.
Fred DuVal is appearing with Ducey in a television ad backing Proposition 123. The proposal up for a vote in a May 17 special election will tap the state land trust and general fund to pump $3.5 billion in new funding into the state's K-12 schools over the next decade.
DuVal said in a Wednesday interview that after his defeat he agreed to back the governor on issues of major statewide importance.
He says Proposition 123 is the only way to get badly needed new funding to schools immediately.
Both said the new funding would be just a first step in addressing education funding issues.
