State officials are warning Arizonans to be vigilant when purchasing used vehicles in private sales, especially now because somebody stole 1,300 blank vehicle titles from a Phoenix business that provides motor vehicle services.

The Department of Transportation says blank titles can be used to retitle stolen vehicles, salvaged vehicles and vehicles deemed totaled by crashes.

The department says it's on the lookout for stolen titles but that individuals should take steps to avoid falling victim to vehicle fraud.

The department advises asking for identification showing a seller is the owner on the title and asking to see vehicle maintenance records. It also suggests conducting the transaction at an MVD office or at a business authorized to conduct motor vehicle services.

Other advice includes and walking away if anything seems suspicious.
