PEORIA, AZ — Two people have been arrested following an armed robbery and a barricade situation in Peoria.

Officials with the Phoenix Police Department say it started around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning when officers responded to a business for an armed robbery near 75th Avenue and Camelback Road.

A male and female suspect entered a store and pointed a handgun at a victim and took their merchandise, according to Phoenix PD. The female suspect was later identified as 20-year-old Maylaina Romero, and is facing armed robbery with a deadly weapon charges.

The suspects then took off in a vehicle before police arrived. A description of the vehicle was sent to all patrol units.

Later in the morning, officers spotted the vehicle and attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver refused.

At that point, authorities say a police helicopter was alerted to assist and follow the vehicle from the sky. The suspects were spotted exiting the vehicle and entering a home in Peoria near 91st Avenue and Fargo Drive, south of Bell Road.

Police from several agencies surrounded the house for several hours as they tried to get the suspects to surrender. A SWAT team was called in to assist when the suspects refused to exit the home. Around 9:00 a.m. they were finally taken into custody.

The male suspect has not yet been identified and is now receiving medical treatment for an unrelated injury, police say.

The investigation remains ongoing.
