Police are investigating the death of a 5-month-old boy Saturday afternoon.

Officers say an infant was rushed to the hospital from the parking lot of Cedar Meadows apartment complex near 85th and Peoria avenues. The child was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say preliminary information indicates the infant may have been left in a vehicle for "several hours," but the exact amount of time is not immediately known.

"The child wasn't breathing upon our arrival," Peoria spokesperson Brandon Sheffert said. "At that point, the child was transported to the hospital where the little boy was pronounced dead."

One of two caretakers and a neighbor called 911 after realizing that the baby was inside a car, police told ABC15.

A woman, who didn't want to be named, said she attempted to help but the baby had already turned blue.

Two caretakers — who are not the victim's parents — are in custody for questioning.

The boy's parents are ware of the death.

No other information was immediately available.
