A teenage suspect is in custody in connection with the deadly shooting of another teen in El Mirage.

On Saturday evening, El Mirage police officers said they arrested a 15-year-old boy for the shooting death of 17-year-old Raymond Vargas.

Last Thursday, officers responded to reports of a "shots fired" and a car accident in the area of Cactus and Dysart roads.

When officers arrived at the scene, a 16-year-old boy was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound near a wrecked car, a police spokesman said.

Officers started CPR on the 16-year-old and fire crews took over when they arrived on scene. He was taken to the hospital and his current condition is unknown.

Vargas was also found suffering a gunshot wound at the scene and was taken to the hospital where he later died of his injury, officials said.

Karen Vargas, the victim's mother, said her son went to a movie with a few friends and then asked for permission to go out afterwards.

She said her son and the 15-year-old who killed his were acquaintances. She received a phone call from one of her son’s friends right after the shooting, letting her know that he was dead.

Karen said her son loved football, basketball, and playing video games with his little brother. The family loved to go to Dodgers games together and spend as much time together as possible.

The suspect's name is not being released because he is a juvenile.

A car wash for the victim is being held on Saturday at Booty's Burgers and Wings at Bell and Reems roads from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A fundraiser at Under Review (13699 N. Litchfield Road) will also be held on May 18. You can donate to the family here.
