Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved in a deadly shooting early Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, the shooting occurred near Dysart and McDowell roads.

MCSO said a 12-year veteran Deputy was driving through a parking lot when 42-year-old Pedro Rubio's sedan rear-ended his fully marked patrol vehicle.

The Deputy got out of his vehicle to check on the driver and Rubio reportedly approached the Deputy with a knife.

The deputy allegedly told the suspect several times to drop the knife, but he kept advancing.

"The driver of that car got out of his vehicle brandishing a knife...," Penzone explained. "Our deputy gave him commands to stop. The man continued to advance at which time the deputy drew his weapon, stopping the threat."

Eventually the deputy shot Rubio at least once, he was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.

MCSO has not identified the deputy involved.

Officials asking for anyone who was a witness to the shooting to call them at 602-876-1011.
