TEMPE, AZ — A driver was killed in a crash with a Valley Metro light rail train early Sunday morning in Tempe.

Police say crews were called to the scene near Center Parkway and Washington Street before 12:30 a.m. after a car collided with the front end of a light rail train.

Investigators believe the driver, only identified as a man, was traveling eastbound when he collided with the westbound train. The driver died at the scene, police say.

The train operator reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No passengers were on the train at the time of the crash, and no other injuries were reported.

Officials are working to determine what led to the crash and whether impairment was a factor.
