One person is dead after a vehicle crashed into a Mesa canal on Friday morning.

Fire crews were called to the area of Signal Butte and Broadway roads at around 10:15 a.m. after it was reported that individuals were trapped in a vehicle in the canal.

When crews arrived they located the vehicle submerged in about 20 feet of water.

Multiple people were on scene attempting to perform a rescue.

The Mesa Fire Department used a "heavy wrecker" to remove vehicle from the water. At this point, it was determined there was one person dead inside.

That person has not been identified. It's unclear if anybody else was involved or inside the vehicle prior to it being lifted from the water.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Mesa Police Department.
