Mesa police say a 26-year-old man is in custody for allegedly shooting and killing a man at an apartment complex on Friday morning.

Officers were called to the Desert Palms apartments near Brown Road and Mesa Drive where 37-year-old Shane Gilliam was found inside a residence with a gunshot wound.

He was taken from the scene in serious condition and was later pronounced dead.

Police say Gilliam was at a family member's residence when Miguel Armando Espinoza Castro entered the home with two or three other men and displayed a handgun.

Gilliam reportedly confronted Castro and was then thrown to the floor.

Witnesses told police they heard shots fired and as they entered the living room and kitchen area, they found Gilliam on the floor.

Police say upon further investigation they learned that Gilliam's cousin's girlfriend allegedly owed Castro money for pills.

Castro was later identified as the alleged shooter and was placed under arrest.

He has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of burglary in the first degree.
