MESA, AZ — The Mesa Police Department says Officer Sean Stoddard remains in critical condition after a crash along the US 60 Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred along eastbound US 60 near 48th Street, east of Greenfield Road.

Mesa police say Stoddard was in a marked police vehicle stopped on the freeway to try to remove a ladder that was in the road when another vehicle struck it from behind.

Police say Stoddard was taken to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle also has serious injuries.

The Department of Public Service is investigating the crash and says it's unclear if distraction or impairment played any factor.

Officer Stoddard has been with the Mesa Police Department for more than 13 years and is currently serving in the Armed Forces. He also runs a nonprofit group called "Archangels" which works to help veterans.
