Police say a Gilbert officer was involved in a car accident with a suspected drunk driver.

Gilbert Fire and Rescue took to Twitter around 9 p.m. Friday to report a car accident near Lindsay and Pecos roads.

The officer, who was in a marked Gilbert patrol car, attempted to stop the 67-year-old woman driving on the wrong side of the road, a fire spokesperson said.

The officer attempted to pull in front of the suspect but was hit head-on, officials said.

The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The police officer was hospitalized as a precaution and was later released after suffering bumps and bruises.

No other injuries were reported.

The woman is being investigated for aggravated assault on an officer and driving under the influence.
