CHANDLER, AZ — Authorities say two people have been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting from last week.

Chandler police say 31-year-old Luis Martinez was arrested on April 17, and 23-year-old Ivan Contreras was arrested April 18 for shooting and killing 33-year-old Darrell Rushing on April 10.

That morning, an officer near Chandler and Hamilton streets on another matter heard a series of gunshots around 4:30 a.m. The officer looked down the street and saw a suspect fire several shots before walking to a vehicle and driving off.

Investigators found 18 rifle casings in the roadway in two general groupings.

In the days after, police say detectives received several tips and interviewed people about what happened. Authorities learned of a fight between Rushing and three men that happened in the hours before the shooting.

Police obtained surveillance video showing Contreras and Martinez returning to an apartment complex near McQueen Road and Chandler Boulevard in a similar vehicle to one seen leaving the scene, and a source told police Contreras was heard bragging about the murder, according to court paperwork.

Both Martinez and Contreras have been charged with first-degree murder.
