CHANDLER, AZ — A 17-year-old boy has died after being shot by Chandler police on January 2.

Chandler police say they attempted to pull over Anthony Cano, who was riding a bicycle, for a traffic violation near Erie and Nevada streets.

Cano allegedly ignored the officer’s commands and fled the area. He eventually abandoned his bike and ran on foot. An officer pursued Cano on foot toward Gazelle Meadows Park in the area. While running through the park, police say Cano removed a gun from his waistband and motioned toward the officer.

Police say the officer then fired their weapon and struck Cano.

Cano was taken to the hospital in critical condition but has since died from his injuries.

ABC15 has requested the police report and body camera of this incident but have not received either yet. Police did, however, release the following photo which they say shows Cano with a gun in his right hand during the foot pursuit.

Police also confirmed that Cano did have a gun in his possession when he was shot, but have not said where it was located after the shooting.
