A Phoenix man will spend the next five years in prison after shooting his friend, ultimately killing him.

Judge Pam Gates sentenced 19-year-old Marcus Kennedy to five years in prison on Tuesday. Kennedy previously pleaded guilty to negligent homicide in the shooting death of his friend, 18-year-old David Christian.

Police were called to a home near 75th Avenue and Indian School Road in August 2015 in reference to a shooting. At the home, they found Christian dead of a gunshot wound.

Kennedy told police that he dropped his gun onto the floor and it went off, striking Christian accidentally.

Christian's family members and friends told ABC15 at the time that Christian loved skating and worked at a local rink.
