PHOENIX — Authorities say a woman has died and a child and man have been critically injured in a crash Sunday night.

Phoenix police say a pickup truck was traveling on Van Buren Street near 51st Avenue around 9 p.m. when the crash occurred. The driver is believed to have lost control, causing the vehicle to possibly roll over and into oncoming traffic, hitting a sedan.

Firefighters say the woman behind the wheel of the sedan had to be cut out, and did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt. She was pronounced dead on scene by paramedics.

A 3-year-old child also in the sedan was in a car seat that did not appear to be properly installed. The child was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and was in "extremely critical" condition, according to a police spokesman.

Fire crews also had to extricate the driver of the pickup, who was also not wearing a seat belt. The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, firefighters said. He is expected to survive.
