PHOENIX — At least 45 cats and dogs have been seized from a Phoenix animal shelter Wednesday.

Phoenix police say they responded along with the Arizona Humane Society to the Az Dog Adoptions shelter near 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road around 11:15 a.m. for a welfare check.

Investigators determined many of the dogs and cats had not received medical treatment and were not being cared for.

Officials say 23 dogs and 22 cats were seized.

It's unclear if any arrests have been made in the case.

According to the Arizona Humane Society, the animals are now in their care. The dogs medical conditions include dental disease, suspected mange, and ringworm. The cats conditions include upper respiratory infections and ocular discharge.

Officials say the cats and dogs will remain in the care of AHS until further notice.
