Shooting near Phoenix McDonald's leaves man dead; police say suspect tried to steal victim's phone

PHOENIX — A shooting near a south Phoenix McDonald's left a man dead on Wednesday night.

According to Phoenix police, the shooting happened near 19th Avenue and Baseline Road after 8 p.m.

An unknown black man reportedly asked the victim, identified as 34-year-old Eric Hernandez, if he could borrow his cell phone.

Hernandez gave the man his phone, but the man took off running with it. Hernandez reportedly chased after him, and at one point, the man turned around and shot him.

Hernandez was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition where he later died from his injuries.
