PHOENIX — Police are investigating a shooting in which an officer of the Phoenix Police Department shot a man armed with a machete several times near 19th and Southern avenues Sunday afternoon.

Update: As of Friday, May 13, the man remains in the hospital. Officials say upon release from the hospital, the man will be booked.

Officials say police were responding to an unrelated call at a gas station around noon when they noticed a man standing in a field, waving a machete around and yelling in Spanish.
