PHOENIX — Three people have died after a crash on the I-17 near Dunlap Avenue Thursday evening.

Arizona DPS troopers say at around 5:50 p.m., a truck towing a trailer stopped in the HOV lane on I-17 and Dunlap to address a mechanical issue with the trailer.

While the truck was stopped, the five people inside the vehicle stepped out and were standing between the trailer and the truck. A car that was traveling in the HOV lane struck the trailer and three of the five suffered fatal injuries.

The three people killed have been identified as Jonathan 27-year-old Vazquez-Garcia, 18-year-old Miguel Loya-Sanchez, and 24-year-old Christian Chavez-Ponce. All three were Valley residents.

DPS says one person was hospitalized for serious injuries and another was treated on scene.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the trailer was cited for failure to control a vehicle to avoid a collision, but does not currently face any additional charges.
