PHOENIX — A woman is dead, a child is injured, and a suspect was shot and killed by police late Sunday night.

Phoenix police say the incident occurred near Interstate 17 and Jomax Road shortly after 10 p.m.

According to information from police, the incident began after the suspect went to a neighbor's home and called police saying he was going to take his own life.

Phoenix police say the suspect, identified as 53-year-old Paul Sarver, approached responding officers with what appeared to be a gun. The suspect said he was armed and moved toward them and two officers fired shots, killing the suspect.

Officers entered the suspect's home where a 46-year-old woman, identified as Shannon Hursh, and a 13-year-old boy were found with serious injuries caused by blunt force trauma. The woman died at the hospital and the boy remains in critical condition, police say.

Another child, an 11-year-old girl belonging to the man and woman, was found unharmed at a neighbor's home. It's unclear if the child was a witness to the homicide that occurred.

Police say they have determined the item thought to be a gun in the suspect's possession was a black hard-shelled eyeglass holder.

Phoenix police say no officers were injured in the shooting.
