PHOENIX — Fire crews have gained the upper hand on a brush fire burning near the I-17 and Carefree Highway.
The fire was reported Wednesday afternoon near Ben Avery Shooting Range and is an estimated 50 acres.
Heavy smoke and small flames could be seen for miles.
Officials say crews were able to safely surround the fire and contain it to a fairly small area. Air tankers were called in to assist by dropping slurry to halt the flames in their tracks and firefighters assisted their efforts.
