A wrong-way driver on the I-17 was stopped early Wednesday morning with the help of Good Samaritans and witnesses.

The incident occurred near Dunlap Avenue around 1:30 a.m.

Preliminary information from the scene suggests that the driver was spotted sleeping at the wheel on Dunlap Avenue at the I-17 overpass, according to the Phoenix Police Department. The driver was facing westbound at the red light.

Witnesses tried waking the driver up but he kept driving through the red light, hitting a barrier on the north side of the overpass, officials said. The driver then attempted to turn right onto the southbound frontage road.

However, there was a vehicle there waiting to turn eastbound onto Dunlap Avenue, preventing the suspect vehicle from traveling against traffic flow.

The suspect then continued driving westbound on Dunlap Avenue and eventually collided into a nearby gas station. Witnesses in the area made contact with the driver again and kept him there until police arrived.

The suspect was arrested for DUI, but was released. Police say the suspect never collided with any other vehicles that were on the roadway.
