Police are investigating after Tempe officers were involved in a shooting in south Phoenix Thursday evening.

According to a Tempe police spokesperson on scene, officers confronted a couple about a stolen vehicle at a La Quinta Inn. The man and woman fled the scene in the vehicle and officers engaged in a pursuit.

Police say the suspects rammed a police cruiser and were eventually stopped near 48th Street and Southern Avenue shortly after 7 p.m.

Tempe police say the woman opened fire and struck a police cruiser, which led to officers returning fire and struck the woman in the chest. She was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition but later died, police say.

Phoenix police later identified the woman as 33-year-old Sylvia Marie Bejarano. The man, 45-year-old Jose Manuel Gonzales, was taken into custody.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The incident marked the 49th officer-involved shooting in the Valley in 2018, the 29th in Phoenix alone.
