PHOENIX — Police say an arrest has been made after a homicide in Phoenix Sunday.

Officers were called to a home near 44th Street just south of the Loop 202 after 5 p.m. Sunday for reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the victim, a 49-year-old man, with gunshot injuries.

The victim was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Police say the shooting was a drive-by incident.

According to police documents, the suspect, identified as Juan De Dios Cazares Lopez was arrested in connection with the shooting death.

Police say the suspect was the ex-boyfriend of the victim's family member. He reportedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend, harm her family and burn her house down.

Lopez was booked into jail on charges of first-degree murder, drive-by shooting, weapons misconduct and stalking.

Police documents show officials opposed an unsecured release of Lopez because he is does not have ties to the area and is a citizen of Mexico currently in the country illegally. He was deported five times previously.

He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.
