Police locate escaped inmate near 4th Avenue jail in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Police have located an inmate who reportedly escaped from custody near the 4th Avenue jail Friday.

The Phoenix Police Department says it was a prisoner that escaped from Tempe detention officers who were dropping prisoners off at the 4th Avenue jail around 1 p.m.

According to the Tempe Police Department, Nicholas Sherrill ran when the vehicle door to the jail opened to allow another agency's vehicle to enter the jail.

Sherrill was apprehended around 2:15 p.m. as he tried to get away on a stolen bike, police said.

Sherrill will face additional charges in connection with his attempted escape and was initially arrested on warrants from Mesa and Chandler for two counts of failing to appear in court on drug charges, a probation violation and shoplifting.
