PHOENIX — Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that occurred in west Phoenix Friday night.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. near 57th Avenue and Indian School Road when a Nissan Xterra, operated by a 55-year-old woman, was attempting to make a left turn to go east on Indian School Road.

Before the woman could complete the turn, she was hit by a Jeep Laredo traveling westbound on Indian School Road.

A passenger in the Nissan Xterra, identified as 52-year-old Jacinta Raya, was ejected from the Xterra and subsequently struck by a Hyundai Elantra driving behind the Jeep Laredo. Raya was taken to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Elantra, who is not being identified, told police he "knew he hit something but did not see what it was." The man remained on scene and cooperated with police.

The driver of the Nissan Xterra also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Cliff Castle Chopper video shows two cars that crashed, causing one to veer off the road, crash into a fence and land on its side.

East and westbound traffic on Indian School Road was restricted during the police investigation.

Phoenix police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
