PHOENIX — Authorities say impairment may be to blame for a deadly crash near 35th Avenue and Thunderbird Road Friday afternoon.

Phoenix police say a 51-year-old man driving a Ford Explorer was turning left on 35th Avenue when his SUV was struck by a Honda driver who ran a red light at 35th Avenue.

Officers say the force of the collision caused the Honda to collide with a light pole on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Authorities say the 28-year-old man who was driving the Honda was taken to the hospital in serious condition. His passenger, 24-year-old Derrick Coleman, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say they believe the 28-year-old may have been impaired when the crash happened.

The 51-year-old driver of the Ford remained on scene and was not injured, police say. He was evaluated, and no indication of impairment was observed, according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
