Off-duty Phoenix officer taken to hospital after assault, police say

An off-duty Phoenix police officer was taken to the hospital after being assaulted Thursday evening.

According to Phoenix police, the officer was working off-duty in the area of 27th Avenue and Indian School Road around 7 p.m. when the incident happened.

Police say the suspect approached the officer and challenged him to a fight. The suspect struck the officer before additional officers were called in to assist.

The officer was taken to the hospital but does not have serious injuries.

The suspect, who police say showed signs of impairment, is facing several charges.
