Multiple people jump from burning Phoenix apartment, one woman killed, firefighters injured

One person was killed, several other people including firefighters were injured in an apartment fire in Phoenix Saturday morning, according to the Phoenix Fire Department. 

Fire officials say the Phoenix and Tempe fire departments responded to a fire in an apartment complex near 48th Street and Broadway Road with reports of multiple people trapped. 

Phoenix fire said 9-1-1 calls were made by victims inside the fire as well as witnesses outside. 

At least four people jumped out a second story window, according to fire officials. 

The majority of injuries sustained were minor and stemmed from the fall, according to Phoenix fire. Some of the jumpers also suffered mild smoke inhalation. One woman was found dead inside the fire and was identified as 52-year-old Lola Atone. 

A fifth person in a neighboring apartment was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, fire officials said. 

Phoenix fire said the victims range in age from a 14-year-old girl to a 47-year-old man. 

A captain and firefighter from the Tempe Fire Department were also taken to the hospital after suffering second-degree burns to the shoulders, hands and neck. Both are in stable condition at this time, Phoenix fire said. 

Fire officials believe that the fire started on the first floor. There is no word yet on how it started.
