PHOENIX — Estonia, a tiny northern European country on the Baltic Sea with a population smaller than that of Phoenix, has opened a consulate in Arizona and named a well-known local politician and businessman as its honorary consul.

Maricopa County Supervisor Steve Chucri, who also serves as president and CEO of the Arizona Restaurant Association, was named Arizona’s honorary consul to the Republic of Estonia when the country opened its consulate in Phoenix on June 10.

This is the third honorary consulate Estonia has opened in 2019, the other two being in San Diego and St. Petersburg, Florida.

Estonia is expecting these consulates and consuls to provide help for Estonian citizens, but also work to advance economic and cultural relations.
