PHOENIX — A man and child were reportedly shot outside of a Phoenix restaurant overnight, Phoenix police say.
The incident occurred near 27th Avenue and Thomas Road.
Police confirmed to ABC15 crews at the scene that a man and a 10-year-old girl were injured in the shooting. Fortunately, police say they suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
ABC15 spoke to nearby business owners and employees who said they were shocked something like this happened outside of the Subway restaurant.
Though, the news hasn’t stopped the steady foot traffic from coming to eat at Taqueria El Vaporcito, a restaurant located yards away from where it all happened.
“Taqueria El Vaporcito buenos días,” Johanna Lancelot could be heard saying as she answered the phone, inside the taco shop.
She says her mom and sister work alongside her most days, saying this place is always busy.
They are so busy that they close at midnight, close to the time police say a man and 10-year-old girl were shot.
Lancelot was shocked when we told her the details police had released about the shooting.
“It was very surprising because I haven’t heard about that,” said Lancelot.
She says when she clocked in, the crime scene tape was already gone.
“It was just regular, like any morning,” she said, while getting ready to ring up a customer.
Lancelot tells ABC15 one of her coworkers was at Taqueria El Vaporcito until after closing.
“He just said there were a lot of cops and ambulance and stuff. They closed everything,” he said.
He, along with her other coworkers, were stuck inside the taqueria until the scene was cleared.
Police say the man and child are expected to be okay.
“Do you hear about [crime] happening in the area often?” ABC15 asked Lancelot.
“Like things like that… no,” she responded.
While crime in this area isn't something she expects, she says she can count on customers coming in to enjoy their favorite dishes.
No word yet on what led to the shooting or if police are looking for any suspects.
