PHOENIX — Officials are investigating a condo fire in Phoenix that left one person dead.

The fire broke out early Monday morning near 28th Street and Greenway Road.

Fire officials say the fire was active when they arrived on scene and crews immediately conducted search and rescue operations at the condo. They found a 53-year-old woman inside the burning residence and pulled her out, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man was also treated for smoke inhalation. Officials say he lived with the victim and got out of the burning condo to find a fire extinguisher, but he was unable to get back inside.

Crews were able to extinguish the flames, but the blaze did spread to neighboring units. A few families were displaced from the complex due to smoke and fire damage.

No other injuries were reported.

At this time, it's unclear what started the blaze.
